Our home under the ground
The ground beneath our feet actually comes from the sea. More than 65 million years ago, there was an ocean between Europe and Africa. When the Alpine Mountains were formed, the ocean floor was pushed upwards like a giant snow plough and now forms the ground on which we live. These soils are particularly important to us because this is the only place where we can dig our burrows. Our burrow is like a small home with many rooms: a place to sleep, a storage room and escape tunnels for use in emergencies. Here we are safe from the cold, rain and enemies.
